Turner Valley Legion Branch #78 has been a cornerstone of the community for nearly a century, with roots reaching back to the years following the First World War. In those early days, local veterans gathered informally in one another’s homes as part of what was known as the Red Chevron Club—a place for camaraderie, shared experience, and mutual support.

On January 1, 1929, the branch was officially chartered, becoming part of the growing Royal Canadian Legion network across the country. As membership grew, so did the need for a dedicated space. Meetings were first held in the Elks Hall, but by the early 1930s, the opportunity arose to create something permanent.

In 1932, following the dissolution of the Elks organization, Legion members acquired a building and secured land generously donated by Imperial Oil. Through determination, volunteer labour, and community fundraising, the structure was moved, rebuilt, and transformed into a Legion hall. By 1935, Branch #78 had established a home of its own—built not just with materials, but with the effort and spirit of the people it would serve.

Over the decades, the Legion has continued to evolve alongside the community. Additions and renovations in 1947 and again in the 1970s expanded the space and modernized its facilities, always through the dedication of members and volunteers. The Ladies Auxiliary, active from the earliest years, has played an essential role in supporting both the branch and the broader community.

Today, Turner Valley Legion Branch #78 remains a place of connection, remembrance, and service. It stands as a gathering space for veterans, families, and community members alike—hosting events, supporting local initiatives, and honouring those who have served.

From its humble beginnings in living rooms to the welcoming space it is today, the Legion continues to reflect the strength, resilience, and generosity of the Turner Valley community.
